Time for a culture break today and to discover a bit of the Bavarian culture at its best.

The Lansdhuter Hochzeit is a huge celebration that takes place every 4 years in Landshut, Bavaria. It celebrates the wedding of George the Rich (son of the Duke of Landshut) and Jadwiga (daughter of the King of Poland) which took place in 1475.

For this occasion, a big part of the Landshuters are letting their hair grow and dress-up like people did then. Everything must look authentic and comply to the strict rules of the association that organizes the event. A small village is also built to reconstruct the way things looked like at that time and how people celebrated this wedding by eating, drinking and watching the infamous knight fights.

The result is a beautiful city full of colors and people celebrating this ancestral ceremony with lots to drink and eat.

I took plenty of pictures and put a small selection online: http://www.flickr.com/photos/frenchfrog/sets/72157621624331263/

Doing a small search for “laho” will show you a few more…

I have found the general loading times of this blog pretty darn slow recently so I’ve been looking at some Webhosting alternatives in Germany to figure out what kind of service I can get for the money I am currently spending with my current host 1blu.de.

My requirements are actually pretty simple. Here they are, ordered by priority: 99,9% availability, fast response times, at least 1 MySQL database, PHP 5, no traffic limitation, at least 1 domain included, if possible an SSH interface and all this for (at the very most) 10EUR per month.

After a few minutes of research I got quickly directed to http://www.webhostlist.de, an excellent resource to gather information about Webhosting companies in Germany.

The company that caught my attention was all-inkl.com, as being recommended not only on the above site but also on ciao.de with 55 reviews written and an average rating of 4,5/5. Excellent service and product overall, amazing customer service etc.only positive….

Now the thing with most Webhosting services is that they all pretty much offer the same products with some small degree of variation (features/price), so it gets difficult to make a decision based only on this information, especially when the difference is made on features you don’t really care about. I was only wondering myself: “Why is it that these guys never offer a trial account for a week or so?”. *That* would help me in my buying decision!

Well all-inkl.com really surprised me – these guys offer a 1-week trial account that allows anyone to test a specific product for 1 week. I grasped the occasion and immediatly signed up for it… 1 minute later I had access to the account and started installing WordPress and importing this blog’s data to test response times of the server, usability of the FTP interface etc.

All-inkl.com definitely scored points in my books with that one… if I was 1blu I would start getting my sh*t together right now!

Reading Webguild’s article on how to use Twitter, I thought I would write my own post about how I use it and what is my experience with it so far.

You can follow me on Twitter at this address: http://twitter.com/njamin

As you can see, I currently use it as a way to publish information like articles I find interesting, some cool tips, things I am doing at work, share some thoughts and share the love (sometimes hate, too). That’s the one side of it.

The second side is that I can follow other people. People who for example focus on posting technology news, links to project management articles, French cuisine recipes, photography tips, computer games reviews and so on… And that’s the interesting part: I get these short messages directly delivered to me (per IM).

On one hand I am always getting content on stuff I am interested in, and on the other hand I share my discoveries with other people – the former being the most addictive part of it all. If you are keen on learning new things, Twitter could be a good place to start!

My verdict so far – Yes to Twitter, but abusing the service could impact severely on productivity as there is a lot of noise on Twitter! Select carefully who you are going to follow!

In short, a nice mix of cultural activities, personal and professional challenges… You can see some pictures over on Flickr I uploaded a while ago (Trip to Paris and Bayern Munich game against BVB Dortmund). Busier than ever at work, which I guess is a good sign!

Nothing more to tell you for now, I will probably post more in the next few weeks (the fact that I write this here may somehow force me to do it :) )… Let’s see!

I enjoy reading feeds, and I like it even more since Google updated their feed aggregator Google Reader. Everyday I browse through about 60 blog feeds to stay in touch with the Internet industry, news around the world and friends. The problem is that this is very time consuming – it takes me at least an hour to get my daily content fix (yes, I’m addicted!)…

If you have no time for such activity but still would like to know what the heck is going on, I regularly update my link blog which collects and displays items I have read and found interesting from my feeds. A condensate of content, just for you… :)

You can of course also subscribe to my link blog here.
